UEFA match fixing?

UEFA boss Platini has some investigating to do

Just now, UEFA are investigating several matches in the Champions League and UEFA Cup for signs of match fixing. The story goes that several teams from Eastern Europe would rather lose their matches by a big score and earn big money than lose fairly and not earn a penny. It's quite understandable really, if you disregard sportsmanship, fairness and entertainment. The clubs know they're going to get beaten, so why not earn some money while you're doing it? According to the Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper, up to 40 matches are being investigated.

On a more positive note, the U20 World Cup is well under way in Egypt with seven nations already through to the last 16. Spain and Venezuela booked their places after winning their matches last Monday and Ghana and Uruguay managed to do the same the day after. These results ensured that Italy, Paraguay and Germany go through as best placed third-placed teams at the very least. The battle for the remaining 9 places continues tonight.

Just a few words about the situation in some of the European leagues: In England, Chelsea finally lost their fine record losing at Wigan to allow Manchester United to go top. The other Manchester, City, bounced back after their derby loss by beating West Ham at home.

In Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid are taking turns in leading La Liga depending on who scored the most goals in the previous match. Barcelona went top midweek but lost it again during the weekend after "only" winning 2-0 while Real went one goal better.

All the best.
