If Tuesday night at the IAAF World Championships was medals-for-long-service-night then yesterday was surprise-night. At least three events finished with surprise gold-medallists and the German spectators were once again treated to a golden evening.
The men's 1500 metres started off this incredible evening when favourite Kiprop of Kenya failed to make it from the back of the field and his compatriot Choge faded after leading most of the way. The gold medal was finally won by Yusuf Saad Kamel, competing for Bahrain but born in Kenya, meaning the prize ceremony would go ahead without the Kenyan flag!
This night of surprise continued with the women's 100-metre hurdles when Brigitte Foster Hylton carried the Jamaican flame onward, continuing the nation's success in the short distances. A bronze for Jamaica only emphasized their dominance.
The men's discus was the culmination of the evening with Poland's Piotr Malachowski leading the field from the first round and increasing his advantage with his fifth throw of 69.15, a national record. Germany's Robert Harting then stepped up for his last throw and the ecstatic crowd carried the discus a further 18 cm. In his last throw, Malachowski was unable to take back his lead and the crowd, and Robert Harting with a Hulk imitation, went mad.
Tonight will be the second chapter of the Bolt success story with the 200 final. Will he, won't he? Will the current world record still stand tomorrow? We'll see.
All the best.
