Sir Bobby Robson 1933-2009

Sir Bobby

I can't carry on with this football blog without mentioning the great Sir Bobby Robson, who passed away last Friday at the age of 76. His reputation stretched far into the world of football with clubs in England, Holland, Spain and Portugal receiving the benefit of his expertise. In England, he took the national team further than anyone else bar Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966 and he will always be the standard to which all future England managers will be compared. Personally, I think Sven Göran Ericsson would have been considered one of the greats if he hadn't had to compete with Sir Bobby's success. RIP Sir Bobby.

The final of the under 19's Championships saw the Ukraine become the first home nation to win the competition after a comprehensive win over England with a goal in each half. Goals in the fifth minute of each period inflicted misery on England, who also lost the final four years ago.

The new UEFA Europa League has just got under way and some of the biggest teams in Europe are already entering the fray with AS Roma, PSV Eindhoven and Hamburger SV playing in the third qualifying round. The first leg matches last Thursday finished AS Roma 3 KAA Gent 1, PSV 1 Cherno More Varna 0 and Randers FC 0 Hamburg 4.
