Weather stations around the world reported that lightning had struck Berlin last night. And what a strike! Jamaica's Usain Bolt had wiped out his own world record and I can't see how anyone but Bolt himself could repeat anything like that time in the foreseeable future. Plenty has been said and written about the winner, I feel sorry for the man who came second. USA's Tyson Gaye has been the best in the world and without Usain Bolt, he would be still. No other American has run as fast as he did last night, only one man has and that's Bolt and he was a metre in front at the tape!
I'm following the IAAF World Championships on Swedish television, which often gives light-hearted reactions from competitors that are interviewed in the mixed zone but Usain Bolt takes the prize. When the Swedish interviewer told Usain he was flying the response was "the time was quick but I wasn't flying, I could feel the ground"! Well, if he goes any faster he won't feel the ground!
The question I ask though is why have the final of the 100 metres on the second day of the championships? OK, if you're really interested in athletics you'll follow the competition all week. But what about everyone else? The 100 metres for men is THE competition everybody talks about. At the office, in the shops, on the bus, everywhere, and now it's over! Couldn't they have kept us on tenterhooks a few days longer?
I'll be watching all week though and I'll be returning here every day to say something. What it will be depends on what happens the day before on the track and field of Berlin.
All the best.
