European tournaments for national teams are coming thick and fast this summer. Just as the women's U19 Championship comes to a close, the men's equivalent gets under way in the Ukraine.
In the women's competition, a confident England came away from the final against Sweden 2-0 victors without conceding a single goal in the entire tournament and scoring twelve! In the semi-finals, Sweden once again came from behind to finally beat France 5-2 after extra time. England, however, had no problem brushing aside Switzerland 3-0 to earn them their final place against the Swedes.
The men's competition reaches the end of the group stage tonight with all the teams having a chance of making the semi-finals. Favourites must be Serbia in Group B, who will be playing last placed Turkey, while match of the night must be Spain v France, where a draw will suffice to take Spain through. Group B seems to be much more complicated, with leaders Switzerland against third placed Ukraine and second placed England against bottom placed Slovenia. A win for any team in each match will guarantee a semi-final place except for Slovenia, who need help even if they win against England.
Over in North America, Mexico humiliated home nation USA 5-0 in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup to retain the title.
All the best.
