Berlino goodbye!

Berlino

The last day of the IAAF World Championships was an eventful one with surprises, disqualifications and sure things.

First the disqualification when Spain's Natalia Rodriguez shoved Ethiopia's Gelete Burka in her effort to come through on the inside in the final stages of the women's 1500 metres. On Swedish television after the race, Rodriguez said she was pushed herself as she came up on the inside but the judges didn't see it that way and she was eventually disqualified.

The surprise, apart from Burka not winning the 1500 but that's not her fault, was South Africa's Mulaudzi winning the men's 800 metres ahead of Kenya's Yego and Brunai's 1500-winner Kamel. The USA finally showed their superiority in the 4 x 400 relay, winning both the men's and women's events without any problems.

In the men's javelin, the championship master, Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen finally got the World Championship gold he needed to round off an incredible series in recent years, with gold in the Olympics and European Championships. Until today, he'd only got silver in the worlds.

That's the end of the 2009 IAAF World Championships. I'm not any good at keeping track of numbers, so the following information comes from the IAAF's website:

All in all, these World Championships have treated us to 464 season bests, 241 personal bests, 48 national records, 16 world leading results, 6 championship records and 3 world records.

All the best.
