One team final

Were there two teams on the pitch in Rome last night? I saw only one, one at a time that is. For the first ten minutes, it was Manchester United, then, after they scored the first goal, it was Barcelona all the way. The goal may well have come against the run of play but Barcelona more than made up for it later. I've scoured the...

AHL star takes Wings to final

Yes, that's right; someone who played 55 games in the American Hockey League this season stepped up on Wednesday night to decide the Western Conference Final for his Detroit Redwings against the Chicago Blackhawks. With just 23 NHL games under his belt, Darren Helm has not scored a single NHL goal in the regular season, yet...

Nine launch 2018 World Cup bid

Last week, England launched their bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the Bobby Moore room at Wembley, thankfully without uttering a word about "football's coming home". At the deadline last March, a total of nine countries had entered a bid to FIFA for 2018 and 2022 and a further two for solely 2022. This is the first time countries have been allowed to bid for consecutive tournaments and those who are unsuccessful with their 2018 bid will go into the hat for 2022. The countries bidding for both 2018 and 2022 are Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, USA and joint bids...

Comeback that wasn't and comeback that was

Last week, I asked the question of whether Carolina Hurricanes could come back from being one down in their Eastern Conference final. Now, they're at 0-3 and it's looking more and more unlikely. They're still in with a chance, though, and tomorrow's fourth game against Pittsburgh Penguins will be huge. It's tough enough winning one match against the Penguins, four in a row will be, shall we say, difficult! Even if the Hurricanes haven't yet made a comeback, Penguins' Sidney Crosby certainly did in answer to my second question last week. In the latest match, the pairing of Crosby together...

Comebacks, depth and turnovers

Carolina Hurricanes will tonight against Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to repeat what they have done in their two previous play-off series in the Eastern Conference: a comeback from being 0-1 down after the first game in the series. In the two rounds leading up to the conference final, the Hurricanes have lost the initial battle each time, first against the New Jersey Devils (4-3 series win) and then Boston Bruins (also 4-3). Pittsburgh's big star, Sidney Crosby, will be looking to play a more dominant role than he did in the first match, where his passes seemed to be most...

Last UEFA Cup goes to Shakhtar

Shakhtar Donetsk took the Ukraine's first European success since independence in 1991 last night after an extra time goal against Werder Bremen from Germany. For being a Ukraine against Germany European battle, it was remarkable that all the goals were scored by Brazilians! Note that this was not a game of my liking. After a bright attacking start, the game fell into a passing fest and with the game evenly poised at 1-1 there were several instances when the attacking team passed the ball from the opposing team's penalty area back to their own goalkeeper! The fear of losing seemed greater...

Javelins in Art

A javelin says more than a thousand words?

Graduates vs Old Boys

After knocking out the Calgary Flames in the sixth match of their series, Chicago Blackhawk President John McDonough likened the situation to a group of college students taking their graduation. Well, these graduates have now advanced another round after knocking out Vancouver after six games and are facing "old boys" Detroit in the Western Conference final. In the team, Chicago has eleven players that are 23 or younger while Detroit is the oldest team in the NHL with an average age of just over 31. In the first match last night, the graduates were taught a lesson with old boys Detroit...

Europe round-up

Manchester United secured their gold medals on Saturday with a low-key 0-0 game against Arsenal. It was just the one point that was needed to win the championship and that was what they got, even if it came close during the final minutes. Now they're champions of England for the eighteenth time, equalling Liverpool's record, the eleventh league win under manager Sir Alec Ferguson and the third in a row. Fellow Champions League finalists Barcelona, plus Italy's Inter also became champions on Saturday, albeit without kicking a ball, as Villarreal took all the points off Real Madrid as did...

Worlds mop up

So what happens now when the World Championships are over? Us Europeans just have next season to look forward to, or look across the Atlantic at North America and the NHL play-offs. Before we do that, there is still some World Championship news to catch up on. One of the most interesting discussions at this year's Worlds was what will be happening at the opening of next year's tournament in Germany....

Big three close in on titles

Champions League finalists, Barcelona and Manchester United, and Italy's Inter all look to be closing in on their respective titles. Barcelona and Inter both had the chance to lift their titles this weekend but both had to come away from their games with one point. Celebrations will have to be put on hold another week. Barcelona was only seconds away from winning their match at Camp Nou when Villareal equalized. A late goal earlier this week against Chelsea put Barcelona into the Champions League final, now it meant they will have to wait a week for the title. In England, Manchester United...

Sweden takes bronze

Both Sweden and the USA went for Sunday stroll in the park this afternoon in Berne with the USA getting back to the match before the Swedes. The USA got into the game first with a goal from Johnson five minutes into the second period and brought the Swedes back onto the ice and into the match to make it more competitive. Eriksson equalized for the Swedes after 13 minutes and Mårtensson put them ahead two minutes later...

Is history repeating itself?

The Washington-Pittsburgh match-up has its history and it looks like it might be repeating itself. After last night's 4-3 OT win in Washington, the Penguins are on the verge of winning a tie against the Capitals after being two games down for the FOURTH time in history! In 1992, Pittsburgh was down 2-0 and 3-1 but came back to win after seven matches. They trailed 3-1 in 1995 as well but managed to win the next three matches to come out 4-3 winners again. It was 2-0 to the Capitals again in 1996, only for the Penguins to win the next four matches to end up victors. It's been a few years...

World Leading throw in Doha, Qatar

The track and field season started yesterday with the GP competition in Doha, Qatar.
The Olympic gold medallist Andreas Thorkildsen from Norway  won the javelin competition on quite modest 83,39 m but it was the world leading result 2009.
Thorkildsen used Nordic Airglider carbon for his winning throw. The same javelin as he used for his Olympic victory.

Exciting Friday Night!

I have had a week with anxiety but also a chocking insight that I am probably the laziest person existing regarding physical activities. I had this horrible physical test on Wednesday morning. I do not yet know the full result of it, but my guess is that it is not entirely perfect.... After that, when realizing that I probably have to train a little bit more, I suddenly discover how active everybody else is. I have friends who book core sessions at 6.30 in the morning, and my husband decided one morning to run to his work. 16 K!! What is the problem with everybody? Or what is the problem with...

A heartbreaking win

Your heart just has to go out to the Swiss in their last match in Group E of the qualification round. They needed all three points in their match against a USA team that had already qualified to the quarterfinals. All credit to the USA; despite already being qualified, they gave away nothing to the Swiss. The Swiss finally won the game 4-3 but the game winning goal came 13 seconds (!) the...

Wow!

What a result! It wasn't exactly what I predicted. Who would have predicted that finish to the CL semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona after 90 minutes? If you're interested you've probably already read all about it in the papers, but I ask you - one shot on goal? At least I think it'll make for a more interesting final. Chelsea and Manchester United know each other a bit too well...

How to train a goalkeeper!

There are plenty of ways of motivating a goalkeeper to work really hard during training, but some ways are more extreme than others... Anxiety!

I have anxiety! Oh such an anxiety!
Our boss has decided that all employees at Nordic Sport have to go through a physical test to determine stamina, weight, bmi, physical age, bodyfat percentage....well physical health overall!
This will happen tomorrow at 7 a.m (!!!!!)

I mean, if I feel like 26, isn't it stupid that somebody might tell me otherwise?

After this test, we will have a 6 months competition. Who will improve their results the most during 6 months?

My belief was that I was hired to sell different equipment that OTHER people use for excercis...

The New Östermalms IP

Yesterday I visit the new Artificial Turf field in the middle of Stockholm. It is placed in the heart of Stockholm, just behind Olympic Stadium, which is about 1 km north of City Centre (Stureplan). For a long time this field was a gravel field, and last fall it went thru a MAJOR renovation for a long time. I must say, it is very nice football fields, with both American football and European Football fields blended together, and also 7-a-side field at the side (as you can see in the...

Extra player?

Have you been reading my football blog? Recently I wrote about 6 5 and thought I'd write about it here too. Although here it's going to be about 6 against 5 instead.

In the IIHF World Championships, Sweden weren't able to repeat their comeback feat, this time against the Russians. They did manage to equalize with just over one minute left of regular time and overtime seemed to be goalless until Kalinin scored for Russia with just 56 seconds...

FIFA Ranking

Anyone seen the FIFA rankings recently? You have? Then turn away, this question is for those who don't follow the rankings religiously - like me. Ready? Then here goes. Which country has dominated the FIFA rankings for the last year? Brazil? Italy? Germany? England? (No just joking!). The answer is - Spain! I'm not one for statistics, numbers or tables (except for the latest league table) but I was really surprised that I missed that one. Did you notice it?

Spain are not just top either, they have been for the last 12 months and are now way ahead of their nearest rival. In fact thei...

Training?!

Why do I have such a hard time start training?
People tell me that when you have trained regularly for a while, it gets like a poison and you just feel that you have to do it again.
This has never happened to me! Maybe I am not regular enough?
But there has been periods in my life when I have done some kind of physical excersise 3 times a week for quite a long period of time.
But still, this "poison" did never effect me!
Instead, I feel like I will climb Mount Everest every time I realize that I have to do workout.
I have spent all morning today squirming. I kno...
